Questions to ask before joining a clinical trial
Clinical trial teams welcome questions to make sure all participants are informed before choosing to enroll in a clinical trial. This list of questions can help you prepare.

Talk to the clinical trial team before enrolling
The clinical trial team might answer these questions as they explain the trial to you. But if they don’t cover some of these, or if something is unclear, you can ask questions at any time.
Overview of the study
- What is the purpose of the clinical trial?
- What phase is the clinical trial? Can you share the results from the previous phases?
- How many people will be in the clinical trial?
- What are the potential risks of being in this trial? What are the potential benefits?
Eligibility for participation
- How do I know if I can participate in the clinical trial? If I can’t participate, will I be told why?
- If I’m not eligible to participate in this clinical trial, what are my other options?
Length of commitment
- How long will I be in the clinical trial?
- Are there reasons I might need to stop participating in the study?
- I know that I can stop participating in the clinical trial at any time. How do I let you know that I no longer want to participate?
Visits with the trial team
- How often will I meet with the trial team?
- How long is each visit? Will I ever need to stay overnight?
- Where will I go for visits? Can a friend or family member come with me?
- Can any visits be done at my home?
- What if I need to reschedule a visit?
Medical interventions and medications
- What interventions could I receive in the clinical trial? Have they been tested in other trials?
- Will I take any oral medications during the trial? Will I need to have any injections or infusions?
- Is there a chance I will get a placebo in this clinical trial?
- Will I receive a different treatment if I have side effects or my health gets worse?
- Can I take other medications during the clinical trial?
Medical tests and procedures
- What tests and procedures will be done? How long will they take? How do I access any test results?
- Who will perform the tests and procedures?
- Where will the tests and procedures be done?
- Will any surgical procedures be required?
Costs and reimbursements
- Will I have to pay for any tests, procedures, or treatments?
- Will I be reimbursed for trial-related costs, such as transportation, parking, meals, and childcare?
- Will I receive any medical bills from being in the clinical trial?
Healthcare providers
- Who is on the trial team?
- What aspects of my healthcare will the trial team be responsible for?
- Will the trial team be in contact with my regular healthcare providers?
- Can I see other healthcare providers during the clinical trial?
